Pulling the Golden Needles out of the Haystack:

Finding and Acting on the Most Useful Employee Survey Comments

Open ended survey questions provide an opportunity for individual employees to provide ideas, thoughts, feedback and general comments in a safe, confidential manner. While this is a valuable opportunity for all to have a voice, it is not without purpose. Consumers of survey data hope to gain insight from the perspective of the employee in order to drive organizational change and general improvements.

While survey comments have the potential to provide valuable information, they also can be burdensome to analyze. Though various software packages are available for qualitative analysis, these tone and frequency analytics lose the human element of the comments. In addition, software packages do not easily identify the specific, actionable suggestions that are most useful for organizational improvement. We conducted three related studies that aim to provide survey users with the capability to identify comments useful for organizational change, and encourage survey respondents across cultures to provide these comments.

In this session, we use the results of our proprietary research to:

1. Demonstrate how you can apply small changes to obtain more comments likely to drive organizational change,

2. Help you identify the needles in the haystack – we will show you how to find the most useful comments, and

3. Discuss how to take action on comment data.
